Kim Tan's vision and impact are marvels to behold. I remember being captivated the first time I met him and he began describing the work he is doing around the world. The more I learned, the more inspired I became. I discovered how deeply connected his work is with his Christian faith. His personal story is quite impressive. Born in Malaysia, he moved to England as a teenager and became a Christian. He was drawn to the Anabaptist tradition and the witness of communal life they practice. Vocationally, he became a biochemist, and started a highly successful company in England. After selling the company, he started work as a philanthropist, and then realized that no matter how many checks he wrote, he probably wasn't going to be able to affect the plight of the poor very much. So he became a social entrepreneur, focused on new activities aimed at transforming circumstances for the sake of the common good-especially, in Kim's case, focused on bringing people out of poverty.
