Description

The starting-point of this study is the Malay Kingdom of Malacca in the fifteenth century, and it finishes with an examination of the themes of 'Merdeka' in the Federation of Malaya and internal self-government in the state of Singapore. Among the topics which the author studies are the traditional patterns of life in the Malay States and their internal development, as well as the varying influences exerted upon them by Portugal, Holland, Britain, Siam and Japan; he also traces the economic and political growth of Singapore, arid outlines the general social and economic development of modern Malaya.

A history honours graduate and M.A. of London University, Mr. Kennedy has taught history at both school and university levels. His interest in Malayan and Asian history was stimulated by his experience of meeting and teaching large numbers of Malayan students in Britain. He is at present Principal Lecturer and Head of the Department of History at Madeley College of Education, Staffordshire.
