Description
"Jason's Country" lies between the Sahara and the sea. Here for centuries the Arab ruling caste has dominated a Negro people living in the south. But now the old tradition has been broken, for the moment, by an act of violence. The pleasure-loving President has been cut do down in the street and and Jason, fresh from a British military staff college, has been summoned from England to take over as head of a soldiers' government.
A gifted man of slave descent, Jason finds himself at the centre of opposing forces. The old Arab sultanate is not dead; Jason's authority is circumscribed by the appointment as Chief of Staff of His Excellency Suleiman ben Yusoff, an illustrious member of the Sultan's family and his fellow student at staff college. Jason replies by inviting their former instructor, Colonel Peter Warfield, to join them as Military Adviser.
The remarkable story of Jason's brief months of power is told by Peter Warfield. For him the appointment brings relief from private distress, but even as he lands at the airport of Sidi-bel-Said he is caught up with Western visitors to the country who will, unknown to themselves, threaten Jason's leadership and even his life.
