THE tendency of professional economists at the present day-as of scientists in other fields is to specialise in particular aspects of their subject. Students in Technical and University Colleges, however, must cover the whole subject, and if a textbook writer is to be of service to them, he must endeavour to satisfy their wide, non-specialist needs.
The present work attempts to provide a systematic course which will meet the requirements, at all levels, of the numerous professional bodies which set papers in economics, and also the needs, short of what is necessary for the final examinations, of students studying for university degrees. No university student reading for a final degree in economics, or indeed in any subject, would expect to find all his work treated within the covers of a single volume. Nevertheless, it is hoped that even they may find a textbook which ranges over the whole field of service to them by providing a foundation on which wider study can be based.
