Description
The essays in this anthology have been compiled from the proceedings of two summer congresses held at Imatra in 1991 and 1992. These symposia consisted of special seminars and conferences that centered on themes as diverse as 'Audiovisual communication as reality and image c reality'. 'Semiotician without knowing it', 'Modalities in philosophy and semiotics', 'Medical semiotics', 'Eastern Europe / Carelia', 'Semiotics of performing Arts', 'On the borderlines of semiosis'.
However, in this book the papers were regrouped under more traditional headings, such as Philosophy. Theology and Religious Sign Systems, Ethnosemiotics, Sociosemiotics, Medical and Biosemiotics, Aesthetics and Visual Arts, Music and Literature.
A common thread running through these papers is that, in addition to reflect borders between semiotics and non-semiotics, they also mirror the special characters of the Imatra symposia. Thus we can speak of the 'spirit of Imatra' - a spirit that emerges from the unique art nouveau milieu of the city's castle and rapids. No longer a mere way-station for semioticians, Imatra has become an influential center of semiotic research for both Finland and other Nordic countries (including the Baltic nations) and also for Finno-Ugric peoples living far beyond Finland's borders Siberia.
