WE ARE living in fast-moving times. The world is contracting and everyone's business is our business. The last two decades alone have seen fantastic forces harnessed for good or evil, forces which no one can ignore. Supersonic speed brings the continents closer and closer together. Man's control of nuclear energy has given him tremen- dous new tools for peace and weapons for war. All these powers have come to us within the space of a generation.
At the same time there have been great political changes. The old empires have all but disappeared; independence has come to most of Africa and Asia with, on the whole, less bloodshed than would once have been thought possible. In less than ten years some thirty new states have emerged in Africa alone and are taking their place in the world, working side by side with the countries which formerly governed them. There have been, and are, difficulties and crises, but the process of tran- sition has, with but few exceptions, taken place constitutionally and in an orderly manner.
Within Western society, within society in Africa, Asia and Latin America, old values are giving way to new. Technology is bringing with it social change. Towns are growing; the countryside is shrinking. Change everywhere brings new problems to be solved. The increasing complexities of modern life are engendering tensions: as human beings, the more we get the more we want. If we are never satisfied with our lot at least we can console ourselves with the thought that material progress is made by people who refuse to be satisfied with what they already have.
