An Integrated Education System in a Multi-faith and Multi-cultural Country

Education, universally acknowledged as having a significant influence on values and life styles, is justifiably regarded as a vital channel in the development of the individual, society and the nation. The underlying philosophical and epistomological considerations that have such a profound effect on life also inform and determine the quality and structure of the education system and the human beings which this system produces. As the Malay saying goes: "The shape of the mould determines the pattern of the cakes".

Secularism is the dominant philosophical and epistemological orientation of the modern day world. Although secularism originated in the West, it has made such an impact that it can now be regarded as a universal phenomenon which has influenced the thinking and way of life of people and nations all over the world. The whole of mankind must therefore accept the responsibility and consequences of this orientation.
