Description

This book gives an account of the development and production of most of the economically important animal species in the tropics, and the methods of husbandry that have been successfully applied to them. The original organisation of chapters has not been changed in this fourth edition, although all have been rewritten and updated and there is the addition of a chapter on 'Donkeys. The book is still divided into three parts. The four chapters in Part 1 provide basic and up-to-date information of the adaptation, health, breeding and nutrition of livestock in tropical climates. The husbandry of the various types of domestic livestock bred in the tropics is detailed in Part 2, including information on cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, camels, Ilamoids, donkeys, pigs and poultry. Particular interest is focused on cattle as the most important class of domestic livestock in the tropics and on the livestock systems in which they are reared. The role and importance of wild game in tropical ecologies is also discussed. Part 3, comprising three chapters concerned with animal products, including milk and milk products, meat and carcass by-products, and natural fibres, has been completely rewritten.
Students of agriculture, livestock owners, and administrators concerned with the development of livestock industries and the economy will all find this book of value.
