Description
In his bedroom upstairs seventy-seven-year-old Ike Robison is probably dying. Down in the living room his wife, Anna, defends the citadel of their marriage and the hard-won sanctity of her own privacy against the ill-considered, albeit loving, invasion by their three middle-aged daughters and their twenty-three-year-old granddaughter. Home to help with the shopping, the dishes and the nursing are Helen, the twice-widowed oldest daughter of this marriage; Claire, who nursed her own husband through his final bout with cancer; and Susannah, divorced at twenty-seven, and somehow never remarried.
