Description
Azmi was born in Sungai Petani, Kedah on 29 October 1949. He was the fourth child in a family of eight. Most of his primary school education was in Melaka, while his secondary school education was in Kedah and Kuala Lumpur.
He obtained his Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws Degrees from the London School of Economics and the School of Oriental and Asian Studies (SOAS).
Upon graduation, he joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Malaya as a lecturer in 1974. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1983 and remained on the teaching staff of the faculty until his untimely death on 24 May 1992. Azmi was also deeply committed to the human rights struggle. He was an Executive Committee member of Aliran Kesedaran Negara (ALIRAN) from 1979-1988. Azmi was married to Rohana Yusuf and had two children, Alina and Rizal.
