Description

This book provides the general reader with a chronological account of Anglo-Egyptian political relations from 1947 to 1956.

In his discussion of the years following the abandonment in 1946 of the Side-Bevin agreement for a new treaty to replace the treaty of 1936, Dr Hail shows that neither country was able to meet the other's expectations and demands. The Wafdist government's return to power in 1950 and the ensuing deterioration in Anglo-Egyptian relations marked the decline not only of British pre-eminence in Egypt, but also of the Egyptian monarchy and of traditional government, a development which led ultimately to the Free Officer's movement and the military coup d'รฉtat of 23 July 1952.

Hail charts the progress of the Free Officer's movement firstly under Naguib and then under Nasser, the initial improvement in relations with Britian which led to the signing in 1953 of an agreement regarding the future of Sudan and, in the following year, to the signing of an agreement concerning British troop withdrawal from the Suez Canal base. However, he shows that cooperation was to be short-lived as new political and economic challenges led to new confrontations and ultimately to the Suez Crisis of 1956.
