Description
The practice of chanting dates from the time of the Buddha himself. There being no books at the time, the only way recounts could be preserved were by committing them to memory. Buddhist monks would meet together regularly to chant the discourses of the Buddha - group chanting would minimise the chances of mistakes arising and would also strengthen the sense of identity and unity in the monastic community. Later, chanting also became a way of expressing devotion towards the Three jewels. The famous Chinese monk I Tsing who travelled through India during the 7th century mentioned six benefits of chanting. It enables us to understand the Buddha's virtues, it teaches prosody, it helps to teach language, it exercises the lungs and chest and it helps one overcome reservedness while in front of others. Most of these are still good reasons to learn and regularly practise chanting.
