Description
Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology is the natural successor to Chambers Technical Dictionary, which for over a quarter of a century from its first publication in 1940 enjoyed wide acceptance as the most useful and comprehensive single-volume work of its kind. It so hap pened that this particular quarter of a century constituted probably the most explosive period of human history-figuratively as well as literally -revolutionizing man's life, thought and outlook and with that his means of expression. Believing, with Heine, that 'Change goes on and on: only death stands still, the publishers decided during the late 'sixties that the time had come for a complete revision of the earlier work. The present dictionary is the result. More accurately described today by its longer title, it follows the pattern and traditions of its predecessor. Naturally its vocabulary is much more extensive, for much has hap pened since 1940; but the aim is essentially the same to set on record the basic language of communication between those engaged or in terested in the numerous branches of scientific activity today. With this end in view all the existing definitions have been examined by competent authorities. Where necessary, they have been revised, adjusted, replaced, or simply deleted (unless judged to be of historic interest). Many thousands of completely new definitions have been added; most of these are in the newer fields of activity, but many record new developments and ideas in the older subjects. The publishers believe that this present work reflects honestly and adequately the level of vocabulary required by those interested in understanding the scientific and technological developments and problems in our lives today.
