Description

Geomancy is the art of divining the future, and good or ill fortune, from the figure suggested by dots or lines placed at rondom on the earth's surface. The fortunes of men depend on how well their ancestors were buried and on how correctly their own dwellings were oriented, planned and constructed with respect to geomancy.

Geomancy originated in China a few thousand years ago, spread to Japan and was adopted for the orientation of the Imperial palaces. In traditional China, the location of buildings is vital. There must be a prescribed siting, dimensioning and orientation even for a town. To the north the site should be hilly or have a mountainous shield from evil influence. The front of a site must have an unhindered view. These are only a few examples of geomantic requirements.

Geomantic computation is still a very closely guarded art and available information on the subject is scarce. Evelyn Lip, Master of Architecture and senior lecturer at the National University of Singapore, began taking a keen interest in geomancy after hearing stories, related by architects, of clients influenced by geomancers into changing building plans drastically.

In her research, she studied ancient Chinese texts and interviewed geomancers. She is also the author of Feng Shui for the Home.
