Description
As in the preceding two editions, my goal in Con-temporary Cultural Anthropology, Third Edition, is to introduce students to the complexity of human life in a manner as comprehensible and concrete as possible, making sure that they understand what anthropologists feel are essential aspects of culture. Throughout the text, I have stressed the ways in which societies are interrelated, hoping to provide students with a framework for understanding a constantly evolving world system. With this emphasis, students are guided to a perception of how cultural anthropology can promote both the understanding of human behavior and the solution of contemporary world problems.
Exploring the rich complexities of human life and culture requires a focused treatment that effectively communicates a depth and breadth of information. Many textbooks are either too idiosyncratic, presenting a narrow view of an intrinsically expansive discipline, or too encyclopedic, offering no unifying principle. Many approach the material at a level above the comprehension of most introductory students; those with a more accessible style often offer an overly simplistic approach. Dissatisfied with these choices, I have written Contemporary Cultural Anthropology to provide a comprehensive, coherent, and readable introduction to cultural anthropology.
