CORRUPTION has inflicted suffering upon human society from time immemorial. From ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, China and India, we have ample evidence of the prevalence of corruption. Ancient China and the Roman Empire provide striking materials of it. Corruption affected their history in no small way. The frequent wars, the violent overthrows of ruling powers, the disorganization and breakdowns of societies, have always been related to corruption. It became crucial to the break-up of these societies in combination with other causes.
