Description

The year 2001 marks the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prizes, and during that span of time, more than 700 Nobel Prize laureates have been named. In 1997, the Nobel Foundation decided to celebrate this milestone with a centennial exhibition. While we await a permanent Nobel Museum in Stockholm, the exhibition will be shown partly in temporary facilities and partly as an international traveling exhibition. But given limited space, how could we present the stories of the lives of these more than 700 fascinating people and their important contributions? Such an ambitious exhibition would risk either becoming ponderously overloaded, or (per- haps even worse) superficial. No, it would not be possible to show everything in this, the first exhibition produced by the as yet homeless Nobel Museum.

A selection of laureates should not be limited to the most famous, however; such an exhibition would have been quite predictable ("Einstein & Co."). We needed to find a criterion for the choice, a general concept, that could be adapted to prize recipients in the natural sciences as well as those in peace and literature. We also needed to find a theme that would be of interest in and of itself, apart from the centennial celebration of the prizes.
