Domestic violence is one of the commonest crimes. It is present throughout society, usually hidden, but there nonetheless. In any house, on any average street, avenue or road, women regularly experience abuse and violence. This book is about the women's movement against domestic violence. It describes issues facing both women survivors of domestic violence and their children, and also social workers, community workers, lawyers, nurses and doctors, police officers, refuge staff, domestic violence political campaigners, and male perpetrators. It looks at women's refuges, at support services for women experiencing violence and for children, at the responses of the statutory and voluntary sectors, and at the new men's programmes.
