Description
This catalogue is published in conjunction with an exhibition, held at the National Museum of Singapore from 26 October 2011 to 5 February 2012.Dreams and Reality. Masterpieces of Painting, Drawing and Photography from the Musรฉe d'Orsay, Paris features over 140 works from one of the world's most important modern art collections.
The works featured in this book represent the shift towards modernity that began in the mid-19th century, a period of great change and scientific progress. Faced with the spread of industrialisation and a transition towards a more urbanised society, artists attempted to represent both the new world that was developing and, in many cases, the idealistic rural world that was rapidly disappearing. This clash between the traditional and the modern led to the development of new subject matter, techniques and styles.
Dreams and Reality showcases seminal pieces from important artists including Claude Monet, Paul Cรฉzanne, รdouard Manet, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, among many others.
With essays written by Caroline Mathieu, chief curator of the Musรฉe d'Orsay, and detailed analyses on each work by experts, this book provides great insight into the dreams pursued and cherished by artists as well as the realities and challenges they were faced with during this period of evolving artistic expression.
