Description

This book is the result of research undertaken since 1992. It is undeniable that much research and scholarship today focus on the ritualistic expression of classical Hinduism. Scholars have given little attention to the folk rituals practised by Hindus even though such rituals incorporate much of classical traditions' ritualistic principles and doctrines. This study is an attempt to investigate the practice of blood sacrifice, a sacred ritual among Tamils adhering to folk Hinduism in Peninsular Malaysia. The description and analysis of a particular aspect of Hindu ritual and its inherent doctrines among Malaysian Tamils practising folk Hinduism from a Christian perspective can be said to be the first study in this area. This study was originally submitted as doctoral dissertation to South East Asia Graduate School of Theology (SEAGST) in 1999.
