"Just go away and forget you ever met me," Erica said in a low, intense voice.
"Can you forget me that easily?" Mike challenged her. He moved closer, gazing deeply into her eyes.
"We had fun together, but it's over now," she answered miserably. "As you can see . . . " she gestured toward little Nicky " I have a prior commitment."
"What does your son have to do with it?" Mike said. "Unless you also have a husband you haven't told me about . . . "
"She doesn't have one of those," four-year-old Nicky unexpectedly piped up. "My daddy went to heaven." He continued watching the two grown- ups with obvious fascination.
And Erica's nerves were so jangled, she could only gasp at the boy's next words.
"Would you," he asked Mike, "like to be my new daddy?"
