Description

Change by drift, change by protest, change by compromise; these are the moods of the sad seventies.

Edward de Bono writes here of the energetic eighties, of the positive future we can have if we want it. Societies, like organisms, develop certain characteristics that make further evolution impossible. At that point hallowed institutions and sacred ways of thinking have to be replaced with more positive ways. Our ancient negativity has to go.

There are no villains or stupid people and our troubles are due to the exercise of high intelligence within bubbles of limited perception. De Bono coins the term 'logic-bubbles' as a sort of mental notation. He also focuses attention on the all important 'edge-effect' and suggests that it may be difficult to journey North if we are never prepared to turn South.

Throughout the book Edward de Bono is not afraid to be provocative, for as he says, 'provocation is as important for creativity as analysis is for truth.' Some ideas he suggests are meant to be taken seriously but others are meant only as provocations. He has no time for the CYA attitude which suggests that you are unable to do anything positive because you forever hold your hands in such a position as to minimise the effect of a kick in the pants.
