Description
This is an individual's account of the passage he has made through the education tideways. Salient features are written, trivial matters are equally portrayed; all are true. Most headmasters on retirement aspire to some continuity in the social or communal life around them. I have never experienced this social pull and so have felt free to write with aims akin perhaps to those of Thucydides" but free from the necessity of directing my pen to avoid conflict with authority or individual. Yet such a book could not be written immediately on relinquishing my desk to another, since many might have winced under a suspected reflection or imagined innuendo, when the writer's only intention was to give a public account of private happenings in school and in educational administration. Wherever a finger might seem to point towards someone who could be personally hurt, pseudonym and circumstance have been used to prevent identification. Every fact and incident has been told, however, without fancy and without exaggeration, just as it happened. I had intended to conceal any political stance, to avoid thumping. away at pedagogic opinions or ethical views. The reader must judge how far idealism has broken through the mask of reality, particularly with the confusion between architectural equipment and humanity, as instanced by my own two modern school foundations, valued in millions by today's terms, standing useless and empty, while so little is done to improve the true quality of human life.
