The starting-point of this study is the Malay Kingdom of Malacca in the fifteenth century and its later chapters are concerned with political independence in Malaya and Singapore, and the creation and recent history of the Federation of Malaysia. The traditional patterns of life in the Malay States are examined together with the many external influences exerted upon them. Social and economic topics receive attention throughout and Malaya's regional position in South-East Asia is brought sharply into focus.
