Description
ON 6 September 1979, I had a deep personal encounter with God, through the baptism of the Holy Spirit- my spiritual pilgrimage. Although baptized in 1955, I had all along for 24 years been a passive, nominal believer. But that personal Pentecostal experience changed all that. The 1970s and 1980s saw a mighty move of the Holy Spirit -- a milestone in Singapore and worldwide. And tremendous emphasis placed on exercising spiritual gifts, especially speaking in tongues, almost to the exclusion of cultivating spiritual fruit. I distinctly remember that at the time when I was deeply touched by the Holy Spirit, the Lord impressed upon my heart to seek "holiness"-more than anything else, including even the spiritual gifts.
The need to live a holy life became all the more important, as I saw several Spirit-baptized leaders fall from grace. So engrossed were they with exercising spiritual gifts that they neglected cultivating spiritual fruit. As a result, their spiritual walk became lopsided and wobbly. And erratic.
Since my 1979 spiritual experience, I have been an avid reader of books about cultivating a deeper spiritual life - especially on subjects such as holiness, Christ-likeness, spiritual fruitfulness and communion with God. And my favourite authors range from John Owen, Richard Baxter and Thomas Watson to J. C. Ryle, Andrew Murray, A. W. Tozer and D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones; their writings have immensely impacted my walk with God.
