Description
Here is a book packed with thou sands of useful hints and expert tips. You can count on it to make your life easier-whether you are an on-the-go career person, a harried homemaker, a neophyte do-it-yourselfer, or someone experienced at juggling job, home, family, and friends.
Some sections of this book-- such as Keeping Records, Man- aging Money (p.21), and Clothing & Laundry (p.262) - suggest blue - prints for turning routine chores into easy procedures.
In all sections you'll find help in dealing with specific problems, even crises. For example, what if the kitchen sink won't drain when you're expecting dinner guests? Turn to the opening page of Chapter 2 (p.70), and there, under All Around the House, you'll see list- ed "Unclogging drains." Then flip through the pages and scan the bold headings; you'll soon discover an illustrated step-by-step description of what to do.
But suppose you don't find the answer right away. Then look in the index under Drains (or under Plumbing) to locate the correct page. You'll find similar help for a host of other problems, including lost or stolen credit cards (p.30), a flooded basement (p. 119), a stain on your clothes (pp.281-285), and abdominal pain (p.313).
In a real emergency you won't have time to look in a book, or the book may not be handy. So it's best to know in advance how to handle a situation. Right now is a good time to learn what to do if:
- Fat catches fire on the stove p.106
- You smell the odor of gas p.139
- Your brakes fail p.198
- A dog attacks your dog p.251
- A person faints p.340
- Someone touches a live wire p.341
- A companion is choking p.342
- Someone has a heart attack p.343
It's also a good idea to read how you can make your home safer, and thus prevent emergencies. Burglarproof your home (p.128); make it safe for a child (p.225) or for an older person (p.239). Prevent accidents in the bathroom (p.113) and the workshop (p.183); know how to turn off electric power (p. 163) and how to use a ladder properly (p.171). A little organization goes a long way in helping you deal with the unexpected too. Most common road emergencies, for instance, can be handled with a simple tool kit (p.200).
