Description
M r. Barrie was speaking of charm, but he could have been speaking of emotional intelligence or EQ. When I was a school psychologist, I administered IQ tests, which did a good job of identifying smart people and predicting who would do well academically. Unfortunately, IQ tests are not so good at predicting who will be successful in life. It is emotional intelligence, EQ, or what I call the right smarts, that is the key to success, no matter how success is defined.
Bruce is technically brilliant. As project lead, it is an important part of his job to see that those in his group are up to speed on the software they need to get the project completed. Liz is the new hire who shares his cubicle at work. You'd think this would put her in a great position to learn what she needs to know, but the problem is, Bruce won't talk to her. He won't talk much to anybody. When she asks him a technical question he snarls that she should figure it out for herself. When she pointed out that she could be more efficient if only he'd answer some of her questions, he instructed her to communicate with him only by e-mail. This was better, but she still had questions she needed to ask and not wait for the answer. Finally after much persuasion, he decided to grant her an in-person audience everyday from 3:30 to 4:00 o'clock. Otherwise he told her to leave him alone.
