Description

"What you are building is not a medical school It is the kingdom of God "

Born to a second generation missionary couple, Ida Scudder had a legacy to passion. She lived a life that continues to inspire generations of Christian doctors in particular and missionaries in general, Her achievements and expansions mentioned in these pages make us wonder how one person can do so much for God's kingdom in a lifetime.

Pauline Jeffery's story on lda is both captivating and challenging- We instantly move into the 19" century rural India infested with diseases and poverty. A single night with three obstetric emergencies changed lda Scudder's life - After training as a medical doctor in America, she came back to India. Fully bound to the call she had received from God, she began her work in a cubicle in her ancestral home at Vellore. The love of Christ that emanated from this life like an aroma attracted people of all classes To meet their needs and share the gospel, she began building medical facilities that she would later call the kingdom of God "rather than structures. With a charity of 8000 dollars from Mr. Schell and Mary Taber Schell she started the work with friends like Gertrude Dodd stepping in for assistance.

Operations were performed, health education given, injections and drugs distributed just to anyone who needed it. To her, people were more important than programs. She threatened the structure of modern health care by going to people rather than waiting for them to come. Lastly and most strikingly, her excellence in the medical profession was for the glory of God. Her intense desire was not that people would know her but Jesus who was her God. For her the spirit is equally important as the body and tending to the spirit's needs was a part of her job mandate, In the complex systems we work in, Aunt lda compels us to relook at the need for Christian doctors to emphasize on the spiritual aspect of life- that can only be salvaged by a faith in the cross of Jesus Christ.
