"A moment of truth provides one with the only true test of human character. It is associated with a life-threatening event when the line between life and death becomes blurred and the outcome is unknown." Anon
Fifty-four percent of the population across the nation enjoys swimming as a leisure activity, and total participation exceeds all other popular activities such as walking for pleasure, cycling, golf, tennis, and boating. Since swimming is one of the top participation sports across the country and because there is an ever- increasing number of aquatic facilities being built to meet the demand, lifeguarding responsibilities have undergone extensive changes.
In spite of the efforts made by the many American Red Cross instructors, life- guards, volunteers, and sponsors of water safety programs, drownings and near- drownings do occur. Aquatic injuries can happen at any time or place for a number of reasons. Because situations like these occur, it is essential that lifeguards receive proper training.
Lifeguards must be able to recognize hazardous situations to prevent injury. They must be able to supervise swimmers, minimize dangers, educate facility users about safety, enforce rules and regulations, give assistance, and prepare records and reports. The position of the lifeguard today has become one of greater responsibility than in the past.
