Description
The Reader Response Phase. Cognitive theory and common sense tell us that learning is more likely to occur when students are first provided with a context for what they are to learn. As the proverb says, a seed will grow in prepared ground. Each lesson in this book begins with a Prereading page that provides essential information about the author and the selection. The precise content of the entries About the Author and About the Selection varies according to the demands of the work to be read. If basic comprehension of the work requires understanding of an historical allusion, then that allusion is - explained. If comprehension requires e understanding of a literary technique, then that technique is described. In addition, the Prereading page pro- vides information about the author selection designed to arouse student interest. The selection page itself begins with a writing activity to be done in the student's Reader's Journal. The Reader's Journal activity raises a central theme from the selection and asks the student to relate that theme to his or her own life. If, for example, a selection deals with a character who fails to exhibit courage, the student might be asked to write about a time when he or she acted courageously or wanted to act courageously but could not.
