This encyclopedia is not intended to be primarily a work of quick reference though it may often serve this useful purpose. Rather, it is hoped that it will be congenial to browse in, sometimes for instructional purposes, sometimes simply because it is interesting to do so.
In pursuit of these aims, contributors of very varied background and experience were invited to collaborate under the direction of the editor. Grant Uden and the first edition was published in two volumes in 1976. The contributors came from a wide range of occupations: school and university, commerce, the law, the old colonial service, agriculture, libraries, museums and technical organisations.
A short encyclopedia of this nature can not cover every subject and the editor therefore deliberately followed a policy of selecting those subjects which would make it both as balanced and as interesting as possible.
