Description
Looking for Love is the witty and poignant story of two generations of women and the choices they make - in life, in love, and in their search for fulfilment. Over a period of thirty years, a mother and two daughters struggle with their own and society's changing expectations of women's roles.
Beatrice belongs to the generation for whom the only question was which man to marry - and she is now preparing for wedding number three. Her blond, vivacious daughter Susannah has followed her mother's example, living only for her handsome prince, marrying and settling in the seemingly idyllic suburbs of New York. Her carefully prescribed existence of husband, home, and children is shattered by betrayal and divorce.
At the novel's centre is younger daughter Nora, initially in her older sister's shadow, who comes to maturity with the feminist movement. At forty-one, Nora is at the top of her profession as editor-in-chief of a leading women's magazine. Now, however, she finds her position threatened - as a result of office intrigues orchestrated by her own protegรฉe. And Beatrice, who can neither forgive herself for Susannah's misfortunes nor accept Nora's compromises now has hopes of a romance for her "difficult" daughter. Nora is keeping this new-found lover on hold, but the eligible Max may prove to be unwilling to wait indefinitely. For the first time Nora realizes she faces a future without guarantees. She must find a balance in her life, learning to commit and risk both personally and professionally - and learning to love as she reconciles the demands of heart and mind.
