Description

Anders Nygren is considered Scandinavia's most prominent contributor to the theological scene in our time. His impact has ranged across the worlds of biblical scholarship, theology, philosophy of religion, church life, and contemporary culture.

Dr. Thor Hall gives us an analysis of his thought and work, putting him into the context of 19th and 20th-century philosophy and theology, especially the concerns of Scandinavian thinkers, many of whom have not been widely known or translated.

Nygren was acutely aware of anti metaphysical arguments against religion. He spent a great deal of time working toward a scientific philosophy of religion, in order to find a proper foundation from which to do theology. His ultimate purpose was to make Christian theology both acceptable and relevant to the concerns of the 20th-century mind.

Nygren is a pioneer developer of "motif research"-a scientific theological method that focuses on images and symbols within a religion as a key to understanding. He is probably best known for his analysis of what he calls Christianity's central motif, or grundmotif, agape love. Dr. Hall sets Nygren's best-known work Agape and Eros in perspective in terms of Nygren's total theological and philosophical aims. Then he follows Nygren's further writings as they take him deeper into other motifs in Christianity, as well as into the contemporary theological conflicts and movements.

Dr. Hall concludes with a crisp portrayal of Nygren's critics, and a look at this theological profile -- his radicality and scientism on one hand, his conservatism and fundamentalism on the other.
