Description
This dictionary is concerned with the wide range of medicines available in Britain that are used in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Although vitamins are included in this definition, there is less emphasis in the main part of the book on dietary supplements in general, or on "social" drugs (such as alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and so on), except where they are of direct medical relevance. There is, additionally, coverage of some related medical items such as special bandages.
The book may be of interest and use to various groups of people, especially medical and paramedical workers at the training stages of their careers. These might include nurses, pharmacists, doctors and students of biomedical subjects such as pharmacology However, it will also be of undoubted interest and use to non specialists with a general or personal interest in medicines.
The dictionary is cross-referenced in a way that allows identification of the main active components of medicines under their generic names (the approved chemical name, such as paracetamol) or under the proprietary name (the trade name of that particular formulation, such as Panadol). There is also cross referencing that relates a drug to a major pharmacological class of drugs.
