Description
Can there be a guide to the soul and spirit of a people, of a country?
We have endeavoured to make this Guide not merely a description of Ceylon, but more, an invitation and inducement to the visitor to savour in his or her own way the country and its people, to establish a bond which will be mutually enriching. While being tho-roughly informative and practical throughout, we have tried to let the visitor glimpse something beyond facts and figures that indefinable something which cast a spell on such men as W. S. Senior who, after twenty years in Ceylon, wrote unashamedly: "The Paradise is Ceylon, loveliest of lands, as pearl-seeking Arabs long ago perceived, assigning it to Adam (whence Adam's Peak that marvellous mountain) as compensation for lost Eden; Ceylon with its low country of gorgeous colour, and its up-country of delicious coolness; with its vast vistas, among the widest in the world; with its past of power and culture, and its present quick with promise; Ceylon that casts a spell on all who ever came within her borders, drawing them back, and still back, to herself" (The Call of Lanka). We hope that the in-corporation of the testimony of many other foreign visitors who "fell in love" with Ceylon, some of them still largely unknown, will prove to be a characteristic feature of this work.
