On The Beat made its debut in Malaysia's No 1 English daily, The Star, on Feb 23 1997 with a seemingly innocuous article about Valentine's Day. Since then, its author, Wong Chun Wai, has penned more than 600 columns without a break, save for the occasional press holiday when Sunday Star was not published.
Wong is Group Chief Editor of The Star and also sits on the board of the company as executive director. A graduate of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia where he studied political science and history, Wong has been with The Star since 1984, and has risen through the ranks to his current position. He is an Arsenal fan.
