Description
Scott's essays have been edited in a manner that interferes with the text as little as possible. No unnecessary apparatus was added. Scott did not write obscurely; few footnotes were needed. Changes were made only when necessary to clarify the text. Typographical errors were corrected; punctuation was changed to help readers, since these essays were originally given as lectures and some of the punctuation was included for purposes of indicating pauses. Paragraphing was sometimes changed because of Scott's own extensive editing. These mechanical changes simply brought the essays more nearly in line with ordinary editorial conventions. Scott's typed and holographic interpolations were included in each essay. Brief introductory or concluding statements were omitted when they related only to the occasion on which an essay was presented as a lecture and not to the enduring reading of the work as an essay in its own right.
