Description
In this third edition facts have been brought up-to-date and the text has been revised to cover the development of economic policy and institutional changes over the last three years.
Its primary aim is to meet the needs of students taking economics in their professional examinations for banking, company secretaryship, government, accountancy, insurance, surveying, transport, hospital administration, business studies and commerce. It also provides a useful introduction for G.C.E. 'A' Level, H.N.C., and degree courses in universities and polytechnics.
This book deals with 'modern economics' in two senses. First, it presents economics as a method of thought, and not as a mere body of knowledge. It explains simple economic analysis and shows how it can be applied both to the problems of everyday life and to the particular decisions of the professional man. Instead of being merely a dull grind, economics is shown to be as relevant vocationally as other course subjects.
Second, the book recognises that modern economics is increasingly concerned with difficulties of maintaining full employment, a stable level of prices, a steady rate of growth, and a balance of payments equilibrium. It is therefore divided almost equally between a study of the determination of prices in individual markets and an analysis of the factors which govern the level of activity as a whole.
The author has been guid by two considerations in deciding what to include the requirements of the examination syllabus, and the level of difficulty with which a student, often studying alone on a part-time basis without the help of a tutor, can be expected to cope
The dominant aim is that the student should understand and be able to apply simple basic concepts with competence rather than be confused with half-digested advanced refinements.
Two chapters have been added to the third edition one on 'The Distribu- tion of Goods to the Consumer' and another on 'The European Economic Community. In addition, the existing text has been brought into line with recent developments.
Although the book is complete in itself, there is a Study Guide and Workbook to accompany it. This has now gone into a third edition to ensure that it is in harmony with Modern Economics.
