Description
Rather unique in the world of Persian carpets is the development of the Lidchi organisation from a traditional small- scale carpet shop into an international business.
Mr. Henri Lidchi, who followed in the family tradition in Istanbul in 1910, subsequently spent many years in Paris as a dealer in art in general, and Rare Oriental Carpets in particular. During these years he held exhibitions in Brussels, Milan, Ghent, Lyons, San Francisco, and San Diego, and many of the pieces which today can be found in the world's museums and great collections have at some stage passed through his hands.
In 1935 he visited South Africa to exhibit in the Empire Exhibition. As the country appealed to him strongly, the family settled there in 1936. The firm grew steadily from that time onwards until today they have branches in the main centres of Southern Africa, namely Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Salisbury.
In the 1950's, the Lidchi family saw the necessity of having a buying office in the main world buying market, London; their business was expanding rapidly, good merchandise was becoming increasingly scarce, and buying was becoming a more important and intricate part of their business. This part of the business expanded very rapidly after Mr. Maurice Lidchi left for overseas to run this vital part of the Fine Carpet Business. As a result of the Lidchi family's reputation in this trade throughout the world and of their intimate knowledge of and love for the Oriental Carpet business, the London business is now recognised as one of the larger firms of Brokers and Distributors in the world in this highly- specialized field.
Despite its size, the business today has retained its family character, and personal contact has at all times been maintained not only with the article but also in the dealings with private clients and dealers throughout the world.
