Description
Ousted! is the first book entirely dedicated to the climatic story of Singapore's expulsion from Malaysia.Patrick Keith recorded the verbal warfare that raged from day one of merger and saw, from a grandstand seat, the inevitability of the volatile union's dramatic destruction. Although he enjoyed an amiable, personal association with the Malaysian leader, Tunku Abdul Rahman, it has always been his wish to chronicle the chaotic political gyrations of that era without editorializing. He saw the need to give deserving space to the three key players involved -- the Tunku, Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew and Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) president, Tan Siew Sin.
This book deals, even-handedly, with the realities of racial politics -- a subject that has, all these years, been considered 'too delicate', 'too sensitive' or, 'too controversial'. Thus, the writings on merger/separation to-date have largely been dominated by segment recollections of involved politicians. Not surprisingly, these have come with political biases. There have, of course, been a few studies by academics whose carefully-drawn sentiments are comfortably retained within halls of higher learning.
Ousted! has been written for all citizens on both sides of the Causeway and for history buffs worldwide.
