Description

To Sergio Telles,
I wish to greet you and welcome you, the painter, the lover of Paris and Saint-Tropez, the poet. Most of all, I would like to thank you for being the poet of colours and shapes, who renovates our way of seeing things, sublimates our everyday life and gives the places of my Parisian youth a universal appeal. Yet, you remain the Ambassador of Brazil, that warm and great country where the Sorbonne and Auguste Comte were able to form an alliance with the South. Being the Ambassador of your country, you are also the messenger of a heritage that does not belong to any country in particular but rather to humankind. Indeed, you are not primarily the messenger from a school of painting: I will not, like many critics, give into the easy claim of Fauvism, even if Marquet, Cรฉzanne, Matisse and Modigliani belong to your "Tribe". Allow me nevertheless to draw a comparison with Van Gogh, you did just the opposite of the one who, having grown up in the dreary potato-eating country of Limburg, came south and discovered the warm sunlight of Arles, Montmartre and Anvers-sur-Oise. You very much share his themes, but your love of life and your southern warmth are your contributions in reasserting the vitality of our Impressionist painting. You are today its messenger, for you are the messenger of a certain way of understanding life. light, movement and the city itself. The Seine river at the Quai des Grands Augustins, the terrace of the Flore Cafรฉ, the church of Saint-Germain des Prรฉs as well as the harbour of Saint-Tropez, and, today, the shorelines of Terengganu and the markets in Kelantan gain, through you, a new life and a universal value. I am happy that French painting is not limited to being a "French property" but rather partakes, thanks to you, in this universalism. I am grateful and proud that the Freach Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is able to welcome you, a friend and a great Brazilian artist, a reformer of our way of seeing things, a promoter of mutual understanding, a man who simply loves to share his joy with us.
With my friendship,
Eolowood
