"HELLO, KEITH!" It was the hostess letting me in the heavy double door of her entry hall. Smiling, I asked how she'd been as she guided me into the crowded living room.
After looking around a few seconds, I edged through the shifting mass of talking faces to a corner and sat down in an empty chair. I didn't feel like talking to anyone.
I was miserable. My back ached and I felt sort of numb. In one way I didn't know if my life was over, or if there was going to be anything good left for me in the future.
There was an awful gray feeling in my stomach-like maybe I might not make it through the depressed days I was going through and that scared me.
Now here I was in Chicago for another meeting, fourteen hundred miles from home and feeling very lonesome and out of place . . .
