Havelock Ellis, who was born in England in 1859, was attracted early in his life to psychology and philosophy. His great series, Studies in the Psychology of Sex, first appeared in 1891, and created a storm of controversy. After the hub-bub subsided, his reputation as the outstanding au- thority in the field was firmly established and has never been questioned since. He is regarded today as the man who did more than any other in chang- ing the Victorian attitude in studying and writing about sex.
