Description
The Royal Academy's popular Summer Exhibition has been an annual event since 1769. Today, around a thousand works are selected each year from over 10,000 entries. The exhibition, which includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and architectural designs and models, continues to be the largest open exhibition in the United Kingdom.
First published in the 1870s, the Royal Academy Illustrated presents the highlights of each year's show and is a fascinating barometer of changing artistic tastes. Its extensive range of illustrations includes a series of specially commissioned photographs of artists at work in their studios in preparation for the exhibition, a wide cross-section of the works on display, and a number of installation shots of the galleries. With an introduction to the exhibition by Tom Phillips RA, who has been responsible for hanging one of the galleries, these elements make the Royal Academy Illustrated a handsome and informative document of this most popular event.
The works included in Royal Academy Illustrated 2006 have been selected by the Royal Academicians who have co-ordinated this year's Summer Exhibition: Peter Cook RA, David Mach RA and Alison Wilding RA.
