Lightning bolts, red hot streaks of pain, fork through my legs, twisting and twitching down their length. Terrified, I scream. My fingernails dig into a hand, claw past pencil then fingers to leathery palms. and stop. There's something wrong. These aren't my mama's hands.
It is the summer of 1911. Victoria's mother has died in childbirth and her father has already remarried. Victoria doesn't care much for her new stepmother, or her stepbrother Jacob. Jacob longs to return to the farming life he had to leave after the death of his father. But when Victoria is struck down with a serious illness, a friendship develops that offers hope in the face of tragedy.
