This book collects articles that appeared last year in 52 consecutive issues of the Madras Catholic weekly, The New Leader. Some sections were also published in the Bombay Examiner. Through the kindness of the Editors I am now able to satisfy the desire of some readers who suggested that the series be published in book form. With consider- able alterations and substantial additions, the articles of a weekly review have now become chapters of a book. This book may serve as a background to the study of some aspects-textual, religious and political-of the sacred writings, particularly of the New Testament.
