Leaders on the ideas of very many Singaporeans, for several years, in private and public discussions, various government and private groups have been working on ideas for Singapore's long-term national development. In 1984 the government put forward Vision 1999 In 1986 the Economic Committee charted new strategies for economic development 1988 saw the Agenda for Action In 1989 six Advisory Councils deliberated on issues concerning the disabled, the aged, sports and recreation, youth, culture and the arts, and family and community life. This year we decided on our Shared Values.
In 1989. I also asked a Committee of Ministers of State to draw on the ideas that have been thrown up and present a comprehensive synthesis of our hopes and plans for Singapore over the next generation The result is this book,
The chapters which follow cover a wide area- the life of our people, investing in the next generation, earning a good living for ourselves, making Singapore more pleasant to live in, and developing the arts and sports Some ideas are almost ready to be implemented, others will take longer. A few need further study and elaboration Together, they outline a programme to make Singapore more prosperous, gracious and interesting over the next 20 to 30 years.
