The success of a nation in reflected not only in economic terms but, more importantly, in the extent to which social development takes places in the country. The prudent and wise utilization of its resources is paramount in determining the benefits that eventually reach the people.
Since 1957, when Malaysia attained its independence from Great Britain, she has been busy developing and prescribing policies and providing various goods and services to the people, enabling them to take advantage of and share in the wealth and prosperity of the nation. The peopleโs positive responses have helped in further development in economic and social terms. Many challenges had to be faced since they come in various forms, some inherent while others arise from the the very outcome of social development efforts themselves. There seem to be great difficulties in determining the right formulae for the success of the nation, particularly in the social sector.

This book is an attempt to examine some of the development efforts in the social sector that have affected the lives of the people. The contributors have taken on the serious task of discussing critically the various issues in their respective fields.
