Description

In the last thirty years the political map of South-East Asia has been largely redrawn (only Thailand remaining un- affected) and what were once the colonies of Western Europe and the United States have all achieved their freedom; the Philippines in 1946, Indonesia in 1948, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in 1955, Malaysia in 1957, and, Singapore in 1963.This book deals with the history of these countries in this period of political change. It outlines the situation as it was prior to the Japanese occupation of South-East Asia in 1942, describes the political developments which stemmed from this occupation, and attempts to bring together and to inter- pret in relation to each other and from a fresh viewpoint the various nationalist movements which eventually led the peoples of South-East Asia to independence.Dr. Pluvier, a Dutch historian, has taught in the University of Malaya. He is now lecturer in Modern Asian history at the University of Amsterdam.
