Description
This book was written under special circumstances. J. B. Strasser is a former Nike advertising director. Her husband, Rob Strasser, is one of the men who built the company and who now owns a firm that creates sports brands and does development and marketing work for sports equipment companies that compete with Nike. Though for the last eighteen months, Adidas has been a principal client of his company, this book was conceived and largely researched and written before that relationship began. The other author, journalist Laurie Becklund, is J. B. Strasser's sister. Many of the people on these pages are friends.
The Nike we wrote about was a passionate place; no one we interviewed was neutral about it. We tried to be honest and fair- minded in the way we approached this book. This was only possible because of the openness of the people who built Nike. Throughout the hundreds of hours of interviews, there were only a few times memories conflicted; those are noted in the text. We have tried to maintain a balance between the reader's right to know and the interviewee's desire for privacy. To reconstruct trends and turning points, hundreds of pages of chronologies were compiled from countless sources for the thirty years this book encompasses. We conducted over one hundred interviews, some lasting days, and catalogued several hundred published articles. Many people loaned us photo- graphs, videos, and other materials relating to their time at Nike.
